Cables are all around us even though with invention of the wireless technology we want to eliminate the use of cables and have a wireless world, cables are still used everywhere.
Cable is a medium through which information moves from one device to another. We have several different types of cables.
Some of them are:
- Unshielded twisted pair UTP Cable
- Shielded twisted pair STP Cable
- Coaxial Cable
- Fiber Optic Cable
Unshielded twisted pair cables or UTP are most commonly used in the school network. The quality of the UTP cable may vary from low to high-speed cable. The cable is consisted of four pair of wires. Each pair is twisted together with different number of twists to eliminate the interference from the different pair and the other devices near the cable.
These cable have a special looking telephone style connector. That connector is called RJ-45 connector and could be inserted only one way. Each wire goes with each pin in the connector.
Shielded twisted pair cable or STP is the cheapest available cable and may be susceptible to radio and electrical frequencies.
There are three different types of STP cable and those are:
- Each pair is shielded with a foil
- Foil or braid inside the jacket shielding all the wires
- Foil shielding each wire and all wires together
Coaxial cable is a cable that has a copper in the center. This kind of cable is most resistant to signal interference.
Coaxial cable is constricted of copper in the center, plastic layer on top and braided metal shield or foil. The metal shield is used to block interference as fluorescent lights, motors and other computers. The plastic protects the copper center from moisture.
Fiber optic cable is cable that is consisted of center glass core surrounded by several protective layers. The good thing about this kind of cables is that it transmits a light rather than electrical signal which eliminates all electrical interference.
Fiber optic cables can transfer information over longer distances than coaxial and twisted pair with greater speeds. And also is made a standard for connecting networks between buildings because of the immunity of moisture and light.
